Problem

The Indiana Convention Center’s rooftop air handling hoods either needed to be repaired or replaced. Extended exposure to the sun had made the fiberglass covers brittle, and a recent hail storm had damaged them further.

Replacing the hoods would be expensive and time consuming, so they turned to Ztech Rhino Linings of Kokomo, Ind. to repair the hoods in place.

Solution

The applicator used Rhino Eco-Coat aluminized polyurea lining for the rehabilitation project. Rhino Eco-Coat is a waterproof, fire retardant, flexible lining that withstands UV exposure and is impact and crack resistant.

The hoods were sandblasted, washed and dried. Any cracks or holes were repaired before a coat of Primer 161 was spray applied at 3 to 5 mils thickness. Finally, Rhino Eco-Coat was spray applied at a thickness of 62.5 mils (1.5 mm) to 125 mils (3.18 mm).

Results

The job was completed in two days at a fraction of the cost it would have taken to replace the hoods. The new coating forms a tight seal around any protrusions, gaps and bolts, preventing water leakage and extending the service life of the hoods.
